What is Sensory Processing?

Sensory processing is the ability to organise and interpret information we receive through our senses. Some children may have trouble with regulating and sustaining an optimal level of arousal to match the activity demands. At Harrisdale Mobile OT, we use a sensory integrative framework to create a sensory diet to match every child’s sensory motor preference to keep their nervous system alert, functional and regulated. Our occupational therapist can complete a sensory profile assessment to identify your child’s unique sensory needs before applying evidence-based interventions such as proprioceptive input, respiration and postural realignment, rhythm and entrainment, and child directed relationship-based therapy. Signs of Sensory Processing Challenges

Children with sensory processing difficulties might:

  • Overreact or underreact to sensory stimuli (e.g., avoiding certain textures or seeking out intense sensory experiences).
  • Have trouble with coordination and balance.
  • Exhibit difficulties with focus and attention.
  • Display emotional outbursts when overwhelmed by sensory inputs.
  • Struggle with daily activities like dressing, eating, or grooming.

Speciality Areas

Harrisdale Mobile OT is a paediatric occupational therapy practice dedicated to supporting the development of children aged 1-18 years. Our experienced therapist provides tailored services to help kids reach their occupational goals, focusing on areas like gross and fine motor skills, social skills, emotional regulation, self-care, sensory processing, and handwriting. We work closely with families to create therapy sessions that cater to each child’s unique needs and learning style.
